Spring Cleaning Guide for Canberra Homes (2026)

Room-by-room spring reset: what actually gets dirty over winter in a Canberra home, which products work in ACT hard-water, and what pros always touch that renters skip.

Canberra winters are dry but dusty — heaters run for months, windows stay closed, and fine dust settles in places most weekly cleans never reach. A real spring reset takes 4–8 hours and targets the surfaces that drive indoor air quality, not the ones that photograph well.

Start with airflow

Before you wipe anything, change air filters: ducted heating, split systems, and range hood filter. The amount of fine dust released into already-dusty rooms by a clogged filter makes the rest of your work pointless.

Kitchen reset (the one room that matters most)

  • Oven — remove racks, soak in hot water + dishwashing liquid, use a paste of bicarb + water on the glass
  • Range hood filter — dishwasher cycle on hot
  • Cabinets — empty every shelf, wipe with damp microfibre, air-dry before restocking
  • Fridge — empty, remove shelves, wash with warm soapy water, dry before reinstalling
  • Pantry — check expiry dates, wipe each shelf, vacuum corners

Bathroom descale (ACT hard water)

Canberra tap water is moderately hard — about 40–50 mg/L. That means limescale builds on glass shower doors, taps, shower heads. Vinegar + water 1:1 in a spray bottle works for light scale. For anything heavier, a proprietary descaler with citric acid gets results without damaging chrome.

Carpets, rugs, and soft furnishings

  • Vacuum every carpet — slow passes, each direction
  • Professional hot-water steam clean (or hire a Rug Doctor for smaller jobs)
  • Throw cushions + pet bedding — wash on warm, air-dry
  • Curtains — drop, tumble on no heat with a damp towel
  • Mattress — vacuum, sprinkle bicarb, leave 30 min, vacuum again

What pros always touch that renters skip

  • Top of kitchen cabinets (greasy dust blanket)
  • Behind the fridge + dishwasher
  • Skirting boards + architraves
  • Light switches and door handles (touch-surface disinfection)
  • Window tracks + sills
  • Vent covers — bathroom exhaust, range hood, ducted outlets

If 8 hours of spring cleaning is not your idea of a weekend — a ProsperClean deep clean is a one-off reset. One crew, one day, done.

Frequently asked

How often should a Canberra home get a deep clean?

Twice a year is standard — once in spring and once before summer guests. Homes with pets, open fireplaces, or children in primary school often benefit from quarterly.
